Arts as Service to Society
Empowering children of sex-workers
Chhandam Nritya Bharati is honored to announce its partnership with the New Light Foundation,a Kolkata-based NGO which works to free the children of red-light district workers from the cycle of prostitution and abuse through support services, education and care. Pandit Das and the teachers of Nritya Bharati are teaching the children of the New Light Foundation Kathak dance as a means for cultural and self-awareness and empowerment.
New Light is located at Kalighat Ward 83 in Kolkata, a five minute-walk from Nirmal Hriday, Mother Teresa’s home for the dying destitute. This is one of the oldest red-light areas of Kolkata, housing from the city, the districts and neighboring countries like Nepal and Bangladesh. New Light, a secular non-profit charitable trust, set up a creche and night shelter to protect and educate young girls, children and women at high risk. The program has been operating for the last four years and provides a safe shelter, educational opportunities, recreational facilities and health care for the children, girls and women in their community. During Pandit Das’ recent trip to India, the young girls from New Light Foundation pictured here participated in workshops and classes, culminating in a special performance. Chhandam looks forward to assisting these special children on their road to recovery and safety.
