  • Summer Camp

Running successfully for four years, Chhandam’s summer camps are a fun, focused and immersive experience for kids as they learn dance techniques, storytelling, expression and fundamentals of North Indian classical music along with etiquette, history and rhythmical math. It is an opportunity for the children to bond with their peers, go deep into their study in a motivating and inspiring environment.

  • Intensives

Maintaining the Guru-Shishya Parampara (teacher‐student relationship) is an important tenet at Chhandam School of Kathak. Every year, we offer intensive and workshop sessions to all age groups and levels. It is very important that students take advantage of these programs to advance their study of Kathak.

  • Student Showcases

Students receive regular feedback and progress reports from teachers during the course of their study. Advancement of levels takes place through a formal examination process (both practical and theory) along with supporting educational materials that enable students to measure their progress and mark milestones in their study.

  • Examinations

All new students at Chhandam start in the Intro to Beginning Level IA class, regardless of prior training. Curriculum and technique do vary among gharanas and it is important that students attain a solid foundation in the principles of Kathak as taught at Chhandam. Students receive regular feedback from teachers during the course of their study. Advancement of their education takes place through an extensive, formal examination process and supporting educational materials that enable students to measure their progress and receive certificates for their achievements. Parents and students are encouraged to talk to their teachers regarding examinations.

  • Annual Retreat

Chhandam is proud to be upholding the tradition of the Annual Retreat, giving students access to a holistic education. Since the first retreat 25 years ago in Gualala, California, hundreds of students have returned enriched with deeper knowledge about the dance, themselves and life. In the modern day and age, the retreat experience is the closest one can come, to the ancient tradition of Guru‐Shishya Parampara, in a Gurukul like setting. Students are immersed in developing abhinaya, shloka, kavita, bol/paran, recitation, music and theory while building strength and stamina in an inspiring environment.

  • Teacher Training

Chhandam teachers are official educators of the Chhandam pedagogy. All current teachers had a direct guru-shishya relationship with Pandit Das for 10+ years and are committed to collectively upholding the standard and evolution of Pandit Das' teachings and legacy though participation in year-round teacher training, evaluation, and collaborative learning processes.
